Description
Licorice root ( Glycyrrhiza glabra ) is a species in the pea family. The plant grows naturally from eastern and southern Europe to eastern Asia. Licorice root has been cultivated in Europe since the 13th century. The species is grown in, for example, France and Germany. In Sweden, licorice root is sometimes seen as a garden plant. The root grows down to about one meter deep, and must be at least three years old before harvesting. The flowers are bluish white. Dried licorice root is available in health food stores. Preparation: Pour boiling water over the herb and let steep for 5-10 min. Important! Store dry and dark. Use: Extract of the plant's root is one of the main ingredients in licorice candy. Licorice root is rich in antioxidants. It also contains isoflavones (phytoestrogen), but also B vitamins, as well as phenolic substances such as carotenoids, flavonoids, chalcones and coumarin.
